Golf Stance and Posture – Basic Golf Stance and Posture
The game of golf is one that requires a high amount of precision, accuracy, and finesse. Hitting a very tiny ball into a very tiny hole at distances upwards of five football fields is not an easy task, and there are a number of things you can do to improve your chances at it. One key aspect of golf is the stance and posture of the player, and these must be mastered if you want to improve your skills as a player. Here, we’ll go over a few basic rules behind golf stance and posture, which should help you improve your game.
The essential idea behind golf stance and posture is to give the player a strong center of gravity so that he or she can maintain his or her balance during a swing. Because a golf swing involves such a large backswing and such a rapid follow-through, maintaining your balance is key. Even the slightest shifting of weight can completely throw off an otherwise perfect swing, and can mean a huge difference in the direction or speed with which the ball travels.
The basic rule for golf stance and posture is that you want to have your center of gravity between your legs. Your stance should be firm, with the feet spread at about shoulder width. The outside of your front foot should be facing the direction in which you are hitting the ball, and the knees should be slightly bent to help keep you from stiffening up in the legs during a swing. The weight of your body should be distributed evenly between the balls of your feet and your heels, and should rest slightly more heavily on the forward foot (for right-handed players, their left foot, and for left-handed players the right foot). This will keep you from getting off balance during your backswing.
Other tips regarding golf stance and posture are to relax your shoulders but keep your elbows firm, as this will allow you to make a smooth swing with the club held at the same angle throughout. You will also want to take a few practice swings before each shot to get loosened up, and to help you gauge how far above the ground you are holding the club to ensure a smooth stroke. With a little practice, good stance and posture can dramatically improve your accuracy and power.

Game for a Lifetime: More Lessons and Teachings By Harvey Penick $13 His gentle demeanor and timeless wisdom made Harvey Penick America’s best-loved teacher of the game of golf. From his lesson tee at the Austin Country Club, he taught several generations of champions and high-handicappers, pros and amateurs alike. All who came in contact with him came away with their grips improved, their souls refreshed, and their hearts gladdened by his love of teaching and his eagerness to serve.
At the time of his death in April 1995, Harvey was well along in the work on this, his fourth book of golf instruction. Like his classic Little Red Book, The Game for a Lifetime is filled not so much with swing tips and stance aids but with a timeless philosophy that seeks to improve your play by improving how you feel about your game. The secret of Harvey’s teaching lies not in any techniques he prescribes but in how the stories and advice and parables he shares point the way for anyone to play better golf by being a better golfer.
In The Game for a Lifetime, Harvey tells us about the different methods he used to help his pupils find twenty more yards off the tee; about the incredible swing of Leaping Lucifer who did everything wrong when he stood over the ball, but whom Harvey helped to find contentment and joy both on and off the course; and about the sweet-swinging pupils whose swings he could remember and recognize without having seen them for thirty-odd years. He spends much of the book advising “the seasoned player” — whose seasoning is measured not in years but in experience on the links and at the practice tee. His highest praise goes not to any of the champions he trained or Hall of Famers he worked with but to his wife, Helen, who stood by him in thick and thin during his seven decades of service to the game he loved. And the book concludes with the tribute his son, Tinsley, paid him at a gathering of the world’s best golf teachers during the week of the 1995 Ryder Cup.
Harvey always said he knew that the teachings in his |

My Golden Lessons: 100-Plus Ways to Improve Your Shots, Lower Your Scores and Enjoy Golf Much, Much More By Jack Nicklaus, Illustrated by Jim McQueen, with Ken Bowden $16.99 He made his first cut in a professional major championship in the 1958 U.S. Open, at age eighteen. Forty years later, he had his most recent top-10 finish in a major at the Masters. In between, he won eighteen professional majors, a hundred tournaments worldwide, and provided countless thrills along the road to being named “Golfer of the Century” by his peers and by publications from America to Antarctica.
In his unprecedented run at the top of the game, Jack Nicklaus has seen the importance of constant learning and constant refinement. Your game at age sixty cannot be the same as your game at age twenty; where you were once able to overpower the golf course, with time and wisdom you discover new ways to approach the challenges of the game that depend less on physical ability and more on mental agility. Along the way, you learn which fundamentals will always put you in good stead, and you see what advice has stood the test of time.
In My Golden Lessons, the greatest golfer of them all takes the best from his many years of playing, practicing, and studying the game, and distills it into over 120 pieces of priceless instruction. Drawn from his immensely popular columns in Golf Digest and Golf Magazine, the topics cover the full spectrum of the game, from choosing the right equipment, on through the fundamentals of stance, grip, and setup, to the pursuit of power and the subtleties of the short game and putting. These techniques helped Nicklaus set the marks that future generations will strive to match, but it was his mastery of the mental side of golf that truly set him apart from his peers and his predecessors — and he shares his advice on the mind game as well. In addition, the book presents a beautifully drawn sequence of the Nicklaus swing at its peak, alongside advice tailored to the needs of the better players who want to be better still.
My Golden Lessons is a book that took a lifetime to prepare, but one that will improve |
